A scary account of what happens when you cross religion (present day)

by naspinski 2/23/2008 9:10:00 AM

I was reading this and it went from funny to very disturbing and even scary really quickly.  The last two are the worst.  Though it may not be right to put down a religion, there is no excuse for these actions.  It is things like this that make people afraid of certain religions - over 130 human beings dead because of a book and a cartoon...  When people are convinced that religion can not be harmful in itself, they need to look no further than examples like these for a contradictory opinion, as their actions are sanctioned (in some cases, encouraged) by the church itself.  It just blows my mind how anyone can take something like the drawing of a cartoon and turn it into justification for the death of a human being, that is flat out wrong, and I don't need a god to tell me that... it is just common sense.

Free Thinkers United

by naspinski 2/22/2008 11:50:00 PM
Stumbled upon a cool new community that is just starting at http://freethinkersunited.com - looks like it has a lot of potential.  Simply a community of atheists and agnostics.   Some good content and resources... take a look.

Over half of Britons claim no religion

by naspinski 2/22/2008 9:35:00 AM
The report also calls for the disestablishment of the Church of England. The role and privileges of the established Church are challenged because they do not reflect “the religious demography of the country and the rising proportion of other Christian denominations.”

This is great to see, moving away from a state religion - bravo Britian. Too bad most of the politicians (and population) of the United States seems to want to go the other way - determined to send the U.S. back to the dark ages with magical heavenly leadership.

Bill Maher just says what a lot of people are thinking

by naspinski 2/16/2008 1:28:00 AM

This is a great video.  Though Bill Maher is a bit extreme some times, I really like the point of this video: stop being scared to say your atheist just because no one seems to like it.

Bill Maher rocks!

Was Mother Theresa an Atheist?

by naspinski 2/11/2008 5:25:00 PM
An interesting article from Guardian Unlimited brings forth a letter and some compelling evidence that even Mother Theresa doubted the existence of god.  Now if we could get a few more people to even give that much thought to the matter, the world may be a different place.  Excerpt from the letter:
I call, I cling, I want ... and there is no One to answer ... no One on Whom I can cling ... no, No One. Alone ... Where is my Faith ... even deep down right in there is nothing, but emptiness & darkness ... My God ... how painful is this unknown pain ... I have no Faith ... I dare not utter the words & thoughts that crowd in my heart ... & make me suffer untold agony.

So many unanswered questions live within me afraid to uncover them ... because of the blasphemy ... If there be God ... please forgive me ... When I try to raise my thoughts to Heaven there is such convicting emptiness that those very thoughts return like sharp knives & hurt my very soul. I am told God loves me ... and yet the reality of darkness & coldness & emptiness is so great that nothing touches my soul.

Also, as the article states, "the letters have not been revealed by one of her avowed enemies, like Christopher Hitchens, but by the man who is responsible for promoting her canonisation, the Rev Brian Kolodiejchuk, who has prepared an edition of her letters as part of the evidence that she really was a saint."

Doesn't necessarily say that she was an atheist, but it is interesting nonetheless.

Obama Stands up for Atheists

by naspinski 2/9/2008 8:51:00 PM

This was a huge relief to hear in what seems to be the most religious-based election of all time.  With a large part of the country voting for Huckabee, saying that the Constitution needs to be changed to be more Christian and the current president telling us he talks to god, this is a nice thing to see (I voted for Bush).  If I wasn't already going to vote for Obama, this would have turned me into an Obama fan, as he is the only one that seems to keep religion out of the government (by religion, I of course mean christianity, as apparently that is the only one politicians seem to think exists).  It's nice to see that someone is nto afraid to stand up for seperation of church and state, what this country was founded on.

Here is what he said:

For one, they need to understand the critical role that the separation of church and state has played in preserving not only our democracy, but the robustness of our religious practice. Folks tend to forget that during our founding, it wasn't the atheists or the civil libertarians who were the most effective champions of the First Amendment. It was the persecuted minorities, it was Baptists like John Leland who didn't want the established churches to impose their views on folks who were getting happy out in the fields and teaching the scripture to slaves. It was the forbearers of the evangelicals who were the most adamant about not mingling government with religious, because they did not want state-sponsored religion hindering their ability to practice their faith as they understood it.

Moreover, given the increasing diversity of America's population, the dangers of sectarianism have never been greater. Whatever we once were, we are no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers.

And even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools? Would we go with James Dobson's, or Al Sharpton's? Which passages of Scripture should guide our public policy? Should we go with Leviticus, which suggests slavery is ok and that eating shellfish is abomination? How about Deuteronomy, which suggests stoning your child if he strays from the faith? Or should we just stick to the Sermon on the Mount - a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application? So before we get carried away, let's read our bibles. Folks haven't been reading their bibles.

This brings me to my second point. Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values. It requires that their proposals be subject to argument, and amenable to reason. I may be opposed to abortion for religious reasons, but if I seek to pass a law banning the practice, I cannot simply point to the teachings of my church or evoke God's will. I have to explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all.
